Umbria

Umbria is located in the very center of Italy and is known for its lush green hills and mountains, medieval architecture, and culinary traditions. The uncontaminated nature of the region makes it the perfect destination for those looking for fresh clean air as they visit one of the many hilltop towns that pepper the landscape. Umbria has a long tradition of viticulture and agriculture, dating back to the Etruscans. The climate is mostly mild though quite hot in summer. The soils, mainly sandy and calcareous, are prefect for grapes. The area under vine is contained to 13,000 hectares (32,123 acres) and there are only two DOCGs and 13 DOCs. Don’t miss Sagrantino or Trebbiano Spoletino, two local varieties that thrive in the local terroir.
